Enamel Paint on Glass

Hey, everyone. I’m Tara with the Hobby Lobby Creative Studio. Did you know that enamel acrylic paint is just as versatile as any other paint? You can use it on all types of projects—like ceramic planters or acrylic letters. But today we’re gonna focus on glass, and I’ll show you a technique called reverse painting. It’s an easy way to customize your project. And by painting on the back, it stays food-safe on the front. So let’s get started! We’ll be working on the back, so flip your project over, and clean it with rubbing alcohol. Make sure it’s completely dry before you move on. Then draw your outline with a paint marker. If you’d rather not freehand, you could also follow a template by taping it to the front of the plate and tracing on the back. Now here’s the trick to reverse painting: You need to paint the details first. So I’m gonna start at the center of my flowers in the lightest shade and work outward to the darkest. If I painted the entire After the first coat dries, paint the next layer of color. This paint is opaque, so we can completely cover the previous coat without this color showing through.

Now I’ll paint my final color on the flowers. You can add multiple coats if needed. And I’ll finish with the stems. Notice how I’m painting over my marker lines—if you used a water-based marker, this is a great way to seal it. It also creates a nice, soft edge to the design. Let it dry. And that’s it! Now that you’ve got the technique, you can reverse paint on all types of projects—windowpanes, picture frames, Plexiglas and more. The best part about enamel acrylic is that you can cure it (either air-drying or baking) which mean it’ll hold up to washing—even in the dishwasher.
