How to take old plates as wall decor.
Hi, this is Rachel from chezlin.com, and today I’m going to show you how to make old plates and turn them into wall decor. So we took a trip to the thrift store the other day, and I found a set of dishes that had botanical drawings on them of spices and herbs, and I like how they look. I thought it would be something cool to hang in my kitchen or my dining room.
This is one of the plates that I bought. This is ginger, one of my favorites. There’s a little hanging thing that I’m going to show you how to make. I looked online and found spring-loaded plate hangers, and they hold the plate by four points. I don’t like how you can see the little thing sticking out, so I decided to try to figure out a way how to hang them without being able to see the hanging apparatus. I didn’t care about being able to reuse these as plates later on because I like the idea of having them as decoration. That’s why I chose to glue them straight on. Now I made the little wire hanging things that I put on the back, but you could use safety pins, paper clips, really any wire that is looped that you would be able to hang onto a nail. So let’s get started. Here are the things that you’ll need: Some plates, two-part epoxy, a disposable container, something to make a mark on the plates, a safety pin, a paper clip. Or, if you’re planning on making the hanger as I did, you’ll need Wire, wire cutters, and needle nose pliers.
To make the hanger, cut a length of wire about 6″, bend it in half in the middle, curl the ends of the wire up to make a shape that only looks like a pretty upside-down letter V. On the back of your plates, mark where you want to place the hanger. For some plate designs, it doesn’t matter much where the hook will be, but for mine I wanted the word on the bottom, so I just eyeballed it and marked the spot directly across from the word on the back of the plate.
Mix the two-part epoxy according to directions into a disposable container. I just used an old medicine measuring cup mix thoroughly. If you’re working on a large number of plates, I recommend mixing multiple batches of the epoxy as you need it. Since it is fast- setting, you could end up with just a massive clump of half-set epoxy. Place the hangers where you want them on the back and apply the epoxy to the curled ends of the hook. Repeat for all your plates. Let it cure for twenty-four hours or for as long as it says in the directions. Now all that’s left is to hang them up. I hope you guys enjoyed this week’s project.
